Every order, from paid to delivered to returned.
One order lifecycle with partial fulfillment across five fulfillment types, returns and exchanges, refunds, chargeback tracking, and editable orders.
One lifecycle, kept apart from the money
An order moves through pending, processing, partially_fulfilled, and fulfilled — or cancelled and closed. Payment status is tracked alongside it, not mixed into it, so “shipped but partially refunded” or “fulfilled and disputed” is a state you can see rather than infer. Orders can be put on hold and released, and each one carries a full status history and timeline.
Fulfil it the way you sell it
Fulfillments aren’t only boxes. Each order can be fulfilled in pieces, with five fulfillment types:
| Type | For |
|---|---|
| Shipment | Physical goods, with carrier, tracking, and delivery |
| Digital | Files the buyer downloads |
| Access | Accounts, licences, and memberships |
| Service | Work you perform |
| In person | Pickup and counter sales |
Ship half an order today and the rest next week; the order sits at partially_fulfilled until everything is out.
Returns, exchanges, and refunds
- Returns (RMAs) move from requested to approved or rejected, received, and completed — settled as a refund or as an exchange for something else.
- Refunds and cancellations work at the order or the individual payment, in full or in part.
- Comps waive exactly the balance still owed, nothing more.
Disputes
Card chargebacks reported by the processor are pulled in and classified automatically, so a dispute shows up on the order it belongs to. Disputes on terms invoices are flagged and cleared by your team.
Orders you can still change
Add, change, or remove line items after an order is placed. On a captured order, Throttle charges or refunds the difference; on an open invoice, the invoice amount changes instead.
Order, quote, and invoice numbers use your own prefixes and counters, set per application and environment.
Good to know
- Throttle doesn’t store a product catalog — line items arrive from your cart or storefront.
- Dispute evidence is submitted with the processor, not through Throttle.
- Every change fires a webhook, so your warehouse, CRM, and email tools stay in step. ShipStation closes the loop with tracking.
